Our Reginald 'led the world in aircraft design'

THE life and legacy of Spitfire designer Reginald Mitchell is being celebrated in Stoke-on-Trent to mark the 130th anniversary of his birth.

Mitchell was born in Kidsgrove on May 20, 1895, before moving to Normacot and attending Hanley High School.

He eventually secured a job at Supermarine where he led the team which created the Spitfire, a fighter aircraft instrumental in helping win the Battle of Britain in 1940.

Now a series of events are taking place in his home city to remember his lasting contribution to engineering and the aeronautical industry.

The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Hanley is hosting an event at 10.30am tomorrow.
