ASK any Port Vale fan what they want most from a player who pulls on the black and white of their club and they will tell you it’s blood, sweat and tears above all else.

One man who fitted that demographic and who epitomised the spirit of Vale Park is Nathan Smith.

There's no doubt about it, after 428 appearances, his departure is sad and surprising in equal measure.

The break up of a relationship is never easy and he will, no doubt, be hurting.

All good things come to an end of course, but at 29, many Vale supporters wanted him to stay and are upset by his departure.

And while we haven't heard from the player himself at the time of writing, there’s no doubt ‘Smudge’ will be leaving with a heavy heart. Vale is in his veins.
