Headstone ordered for war hero's unmarked grave after rededication
THE unmarked grave of a Stoke-on-Trent First World War hero is to be given an official headstone.
Private Alfred William Holdcroft was a member of the 1/5th North Staffordshire Regiment who was shot in the chest in France during the 1916 Somme offensive.
His wounds left him a paraplegic and Pte Holdcroft died in 1918 at the Star and Garter convalescent home in Surrey of nephritis (inflammation of the kidney) and flu - possibly unable to fight off infection because of his injuries.
His grave has been unmarked in Burslem Cemetery ever since.
Now a rededication ceremony has been held to lay a new cross ahead of the arrival of an official headstone.
