AS LONGTON PREPARES TO CELEBRATE ITS LATEST PIG WALK ON SUNDAY, HISTORIAN MERVYN EDWARDS OFFERS UP A FEW PORCINE-RELATED TALES FROM THE TOWN...

ONGTON and pigs have a long history and this week, we are considering the town’s distant past in relation to all matters porcine.

The bygone name of Hog’s Lane in the town sounds altogether more rustic and rather shabby than does its later moniker, Sutherland Roadbut it was in Hog’s Lane where George Barnes, an early potter, was trading in the 1820s as well as William Taylor, another industrialist.

Pub historians will know that among the many short-lived pubs in Neck End was the Pig and Whistle in Flint Street - while in 1844 a powerful porker was slaughtered by Mr Bryan, the landlord of another pub, namely the Wheatsheaf.

The local press reported that said creature weighed ‘nearly forty score’ and was one of the best pigs that had been killed in the neighbourhood for some time.
