BEFORE we cast an eye over the TV lineup for Christmas Day, can I just begin by saying how inventive and original it is?

No, I can't. With a couple of exceptions, such as the Amandaland Christmas Special (9.15pm, BBC1), guest starring Jennifer Saunders, and the Gladiators: Celebrity Special (3.35pm, BBC1) - yes, sorry, there's an abundance of shows with “special” in the title - this year’s Christmas Day schedules feel much the same as most years'.But that's fine. Christmas, after all, is about comforting familiarity. The inventive stuff can wait.
