It was quite gratifying to note that a 10-day Sanskrit learning programme, titled as "Sanskrit Sambhasan Shivir Abhiyaan", was organised by the Department of Sanskrit, Shivaji College, University of Delhi, starting from 23rd April, 2025.
This noble initiative formed a part of Delhi government's broad-based programme conducted in Delhi in collaboration with the Non-Government Organisation (NGO) known as Sanskrit Bharati, under which Sanskrit learning camps were organised in 1,008 locations (including schools, colleges and temples) across the Delhi city. The main objective of this massive Sanskrit learning programme was to promote the revival of learning in Sanskrit and its widespread use as a common language in people's daily lives. The concluding ceremony of the Sanskrit Sambhasan Shivir Abhiyaan held in Delhi University’s sports stadium on 4th May, 2025, was attended by high profile dignitaries including the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, the Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta, and the Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University, Professor Yogesh Singh.
The study of Sanskrit and its relevance in the contemporary Indian society is considered significant on account of several reasons. Sanskrit is an Indo-Aryan language, and it is believed to be the mother of the European as well as the Indian languages. The study of Sanskrit not only provides a deeper understanding of the linguistic and cultural heritage of India but also helps in preserving India’s composite culture, rich traditions and national identity. Sanskrit serves as a symbol of India’s cultural heritage and its study helps us to maintain connectivity with our glorious past.
