Comelec not keen on placing Abra under its control

The Commission on Elections is not inclined to place Abra under Comelec control despite rising poll-related violent incidents that have occurred in several areas in the province since the election period started.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia yesterday said the poll body is looking into recent violent incidents to determine if some areas in Abra need to be placed under Comelec control.

Garcia said the poll body would only place the entire province under Comelec control if cases of poll-related violence are being reported in a majority of Abra's municipalities and cities, and the operation of law enforcement agencies are compromised.

On Monday, a barangay chairman and a candidate for a municipal council seat were killed when trouble erupted during a campaign rally in Lagangilang town.
