A Tribute to Prof. ChamanLal Gupta: A Visionary Leader and True Son of Jammu

Even today, his memories remain fresh and cherished. His life, marked by humility, simplicity, and unwavering dedication to the public, continues to serve as a guiding light. While no words can truly express the depth of loss felt by those who knew him, his kindness, integrity, and leadership will forever remain etched in our hearts.

A Multifaceted Personality

Prof. ChamanLal Gupta was born in the village of Kalith, Akhnoor-a land that has given India many great personalities. He was a man of exceptional ability and character, who dedicated his life to serving the people of Jammu and Kashmir and the nation. His contributions extended beyond politics. He was an industrialist, an educationist, a dedicated RSS Pracharak, and a passionate trekker.

His journey in public life began early. As a student in the early 1950s, he participated in nationalist movements, including a hunger strike demanding the right to hoist the national flag in Jammu—a bold act in those days, given the state's special status under Article 370. This early display of patriotism set the tone for the rest of his life.

Political Contributions

Prof. Gupta's political career spanned more than six decades. He was elected to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly in 1972 and again from 2008 to 2014. His national political journey began when he was elected to the 11th LokSabha from Udhampur in 1996, followed by re-election to the 12th and 13th Lok Sabhas in 1998 and 1999, respectively.
