With a blend of traditional beats and modern rhythms, colourful displays and hard-hitting slogans, the 16th Tamil Nadu Rainbow Coalition Self-Respect Parade on Sunday was a grand success

PRIDE AND PROGRESS

THANKS to the movie Manjummel Boys, this song from Kamal Hassan's movie Guna has returned to our playlists. From reels to parties, this song is reclaiming spaces. The verses seem to have more meaning.

As the song echoed through the streets of Egmore on Sunday, nearly 5,000 people walked in solidarity for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community at the 16th Tamil Nadu Rainbow Coalition Self-Respect Parade.

imageBalloons in every shade of the rainbow floated high, symbolising hope and joy in the face of adversity. Flags fluttered proudly in the hands of marchers. Placards carried powerful messages. "We are all humans," declared one, affirming the universal dignity and rights of every individual. "My body does not define who I am," LA declared another, challenging stereotypes and promoting self-acceptance. "Love without Labels" echoed a sentiment of unconditional acceptance. "LGBTQIA+ rights are human rights" stood as a reminder of the ongoing fight for equality under the law and in society. "Neutrality in the face of oppression is complicity" underscored the importance of allyship and active support.
