TORRENTIAL overnight rain, the heaviest in nearly four decades, battered Kolkata and its adjoining districts on Tuesday, claiming at least 10 lives-nine from electrocution besides paralysing the city.
The deluge, recording 251.4 mm in under 24 hours, was the highest since 1986 and the sixthhighest single-day rainfall in 137 years, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
