Heavy rain pounds southern districts, 75-yr-old electrocuted in Thoothukudi

CONTINUOUS heavy rain pounded southern districts of Madurai, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar and Sivaganga since Sunday severely disrupting life in several areas.

A 75-year-old security guard died due to electrocution in Thoothukudi city. According to sources, the victim K Palaniandi (75) of Naaval Nagar was returning home from work when he allegedly stepped on a power cable that was submerged in Ganesan colony. He died on the spot. Thoothukudi south police shifted the body to Thoothukudi medical college hospital.

The Thamirabarani river is in spate as large volume of water is being released into it from upstream. According to officials, over 22,000 cusecs of water was discharged from Maruthur anaicut and 19,000 cusecs from the Srivaikuntam anaicut into the river. The low-level bridge at Eral was submerged. Due to the rain, district collector K Elambahavath cancelled the weekly grievance meeting.
