Cong challenges tweaks in election rules, moves SC seeking 'transparency'

THE Congress on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court challenging the Central government's move to amend the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961.

Based on the recommendation of the Election Commission of India, the Union Ministry of Law and Justice, through a notification on December 20, brought into effect amendments to Rule 93(2)(a) of the Conduct of Election Rules, restricting the type of documents open to public inspection.

The amendments prevent the public access to certain electronic documents, such as CCTV camera and webcasting footages and video recordings of candidates.
