GST evasion crosses ₹7L crore in 5 yrs: Centre

Goods and Services Tax (GST) evasion totalling ₹7,07,042 crore was detected across 91,370 cases in the last five financial years, Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary informed the Lok Sabha.
The figures were disclosed in response to a question raised by Puducherry Lok Sabha MP V Vaithilingam.
The data revealed that fraudulent claims of Input Tax Credit (ITC) accounted for a substantial portion of the evasion with a total of 44,938 cases amounting to ₹1,78,541 crore during this period. Of this, ₹1,29,175 crore was recovered through voluntary deposits, including ₹12,831 crore in the current fiscal year.
GST evasion has witnessed a sharp rise since 2020-2021. The officials detected ₹49,384 crore worth of evasion in 12,596 cases that year which surged to ₹2,23,375 crore across 30,056 cases by 2024-2025.
