To be presented to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday, tabled in Parliament on Friday

- PREETHA NAIR @New Delhi

THE Joint Parliamentary Committee examining the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 adopted a revised version of the draft legislation by a 15-11 majority vote on Wednesday amid fierce disapproval by Opposition members, who termed it a violation of the fundamental rights of Muslims.

According to panel chairman Jagdambika Pal, the report will be submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday. The government is keen to take up the bill during the first half of the Parliament's budget session, which is scheduled to begin on January 31.

Opposition MPs including Congress, Trinamool Congress, DMK and AIMIM, submitted their dissent notes, saying the Bill will allow excessive government interference in the functioning, control, and management of waqf and waqf properties in the country.
