HITTING out at the Election Commission (EC) over alleged irregularities in the Maharashtra assembly polls, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday asked the poll panel to come clean on how 9.7 crore people cast their votes when the state has an adult population of 9.4 crore.
Addressing a joint press conference along with NCP-SS's Supriya Sule and Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Sanjay Raut, Gandhi claimed the total number of voters added in Maharashtra was equivalent to the population of a state like Himachal Pradesh. In the five months between the Lok Sabha and assembly polls, 39 lakh new voters were added in Maharashtra, higher than the 32 lakh voters added in the 5 years between the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly poll and the 2024 Lok Sabha election, he said.
The Congress leader claimed that despite repeated requests of the opposition parties, the EC hasn't provided the list of voters in both Lok Sabha and assembly elections.
