Over 10K from UP village serve in Armed Forces
The New Indian Express Nagapattinam
|May 19, 2025
SOME 40 km from Ghazipur in eastern UP lies Asia's largest village (population-wise), Gahmar. Every household in the village boasts of having at least one person serving in the Indian Army or retired from the Forces, earning it the popular title of 'village of soldiers'.
Locals say Gahmar has the distinction of having over 15,000 men who have served in the Indian Army so far. The village has a reason to be in public discourse, especially during the current Indo-Pak conflict.
The village, with a population of 1.5 lakh, has around 10,000 people posted in various places as part of the Indian Army.
