SRI Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research director Dr K S Ravindranath has attributed the rise in heart attacks among youths to a range of factors, particularly lifestyle changes.

Inaugurating National Doctors' Day observed in honour of Dr BC Roy at the Institute of Engineers Hall and organised by Anveshana Seva Trust, Dr Ravindranath recalled that Dr Roy was born on July 1, 1882, and died on July 1, 1962. "He was not only a doctor but also a politician and a social worker. He served as Chief Minister of West Bengal and was close to Mahatma Gandhi. When Gandhi refused to take English medicine, it was Dr Roy who persuaded him to accept treatment. Dr Roy devoted his life to medicine and public service and was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1961," he said.

He further noted the challenges faced by doctors in India today. "Doctors spend nearly 30 years in education and another decade gaining specialisations. Their prime youth is dedicated to learning and serving the public. They often sacrifice time with their families. This selfless service has earned them great respect," he said.

He, however, lamented that doctors are increasingly facing difficult situations. "Patients are often brought to hospitals in critical or terminal conditions. Doctors always try their best to save them. No doctor wants a patient to die. Yet despite these efforts, some patients don't survive. Unfortunately, there have been instances of doctors being abused or attacked by angry family members in such situations. These attacks must stop. People should understand that doctors are serving society selflessly," he urged.
