Nobel Laureate Venki Ramakrishnan Delves into Complexities of Ageing

Sheds light on biological processes and societal implications of ageing, at an event in Mysuru

NOBEL laureate and molecular biologist Dr Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, who is popularly known as Venki Ramakrishnan, delved into the complexities of ageing, shedding light on the biological processes and societal implications.

Speaking during a thought-provoking interaction with Prof C Naganna and Dr Mewa Singh in connection with his latest book ‘Why We Die’ at an event organised by Mysuru Literary Forum Charitable Trust and Mysuru Book Clubs at Vijnana Bhavan here on Wednesday, Ramakrishnan explained that as humans age, the body’s ability to produce proteins at the right time and in the right amounts, as well as to eliminate dysfunctional proteins, diminishes.

“Ageing is a gradual process characterised by the accumulation of cellular and organ dysfunction, which eventually leads to the failure of critical systems and, ultimately, death,” he said.
