A special pilot project to clear seemai karuvelam trees would soon be initiated in 26 villages—two per block—to be selected in Madurai district, said collector K. J. Praveen Kumar on Friday.

- EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE @ Madurai/Ramanathapuram

The collector was responding to a farmer's petition seeking action on the invasive plant species, during the agricultural grievance redressal meeting held in Madurai. As the spread of the trees extends along and into forest areas at several locations, district officials said the forest department has set the cost for removing the trees during a meeting held last week.

Later in the meeting, N. Palanichamy, a representative of farmers from Kottampatti, raised a complaint regarding the wild boar and monkey intrusion issues frequently faced by the farmers in Kottampatti, Melur, and Thirumangalam blocks.
