The Calcutta High Court has questioned why the drive to identify 'Bangladeshis' was launched across the country at the same time.

- KAUSHIK PRADHAN @ Kolkata

"What is the reason behind this? Is it a premeditated drive? There are allegations that Bengali-speaking people are being detained?" Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty said on Wednesday.

Quizzing the Centre's counsel in the matter, the bench said, "I would request you to inform us about this matter. If this is not done, a wrong message may be sent out. There may be a wrong step. For example, there are allegations that people are being detained for speaking Bengali and deported to Bangladesh."
