CERN turns lead into the precious metal, albeit in miniscule quantities for a fleeting moment
In a modern scientific achievement that would have thrilled ancient alchemists, scientists at CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire, or European Council for Nuclear Research) have recently announced that they managed to turn lead into gold, albeit in microscopic amounts and for the briefest moment imaginable.
Using the world's most powerful particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), located underground near Geneva on the border between Switzerland and France, researchers working on the ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) project successfully witnessed the transformation of lead-208 nuclei into gold-203 nuclei through high-energy electromagnetic interactions.
Though the achievement does not make gold production economically viable, it opens up a fascinating window into the underlying forces of the universe, and thus gives a respectful nod to a quest that has intrigued humanity for millennia.
The idea of transmuting base metals like lead into noble ones such as gold dates back to ancient times. From Hellenistic Egypt to medieval Europe and Mesoamerica, alchemists saw this transformation as both a physical and spiritual process. Their goal was not only material wealth, but also the perfection of matter, and, metaphorically, the soul.
