A Thousand Orchid Blooms Greet Visitors at Sarovaram
The New Indian Express Kozhikode
|July 08, 2025
A thousand delicate blooms now greet visitors at Sarovaram Biopark, their vibrant colours and fragile forms whispering stories of survival.
Once clinging to trees marked for felling along highway projects, these native orchids have found a new home amid the mangroves and tranquil waters of Kozhikode's cherished urban sanctuary.
In a remarkable conservation effort, over 18,000 orchids have been rescued and relocated to the park, thanks to a collaborative initiative by the KSCSTE-Malabar Botanical Garden and Institute for Plant Sciences and the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, UK. Notably, more than 70% of these rescued blooms belong to rare, endemic species, making Sarovaram not just a haven for plants, but a living archive of Kerala's fast-disappearing natural heritage.
