290 drug smugglers held in Punjab police crackdown, 232 cases filed

A day after Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann set a deadline of three months to make the state drug-free, police conducted raids at drug hotspots on Saturday and arrested 290 smugglers after registering 232 FIRs.

The drive was launched on a day the cabinet sub-committee on drug menace held its first meeting in which ministers divided districts among themselves to make them narcotics-free.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said the four-hour cordon and search operation led to recovery of 8.14 kg heroin, 1.21 kg opium, 3.5 kg ganja, 19 kg poppy husk, 700 grams of charas, 16,238 intoxicant tablets, pills, injections, and 8.02 lakh cash. He said the CASO was conducted from 9am to 1pm simultaneously in all 28 police districts of the state.
