DEPUTY Excise Commissioner M Naushad has said that 6,165 people in the district have been freed from drug addiction through the 'Vimukthi Mission' launched by the excise department. The beneficiaries gained "a new life" through free treatment at the Vimukthi Mission's drug addiction treatment centre at the Paravur Rama Rao Memorial Taluk Hospital in Nedungolam, he said. The treatment period is 21 days, though it may vary depending on each individual's condition.
In the past year, the excise department conducted 17,686 raids in the district, registering 2,368 Abkari cases — in connection with illicit liquor trade — and 1,367 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) cases.
