AN Indian national from Haryana is set to be deported from the US after being detained at Newark Airport, New Jersey, for entering the country illegally without a valid visa, people familiar with the development confirmed on Tuesday.
The case gained national and diaspora-wide attention after a viral social media video showed US officials handcuffing the man, pinning him to the ground with his hands and legs tied.
Indian-American entrepreneur Kunal Jain, who witnessed the scene, posted the video online, describing the individual, believed to be a student, as "crying, treated like a criminal," and called the episode "a human tragedy."
The footage has since sparked outrage among the Indian diaspora and triggered calls for accountability.
