A FRESHWATER crab species named after the district thrilled local environmentalists who felt that Kasaragod has enormous biodiversity yet to be explored. Researchers from the Department of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries from the University of Kerala found this new crab genus and species Kasargodina Sheeba (Kasargodia sheebae) at Ranipuram Hill station at the Western Ghats in the district.
