173 Mushroom Species Documented by Fungal Survey in Aralam

A three-day fungal survey held from August 8 to 10 at Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary revealed the remarkable biodiversity of fungi in Kerala's forests, identifying as many as 173 distinct species of mushrooms.

Researchers confirmed that several of these varieties are rare, edible, and endowed with medicinal properties, highlighting their ecological and nutritional importance. The survey was carried out by five exploration teams that trekked through Valayamchal, Parippathodu, Narikkad, Meenmutty, and Chavachi, meticulously recording the wide range of fungi thriving in the region.

Organized by the Kerala forest department in collaboration with the Mushrooms of India community, the event brought together scientists, doctors, and nature enthusiasts from across the state, showcasing not just the richness of fungal diversity but also the potential health and environmental benefits these species offer.
