Indi's lemons go global with first export to Dubai

The famed Kagazi variety of lemon of Indi taluk, known for its long shelf life, higher juice content, and unique aroma, has entered the global market with its first consignment exported to Dubai.

Indi, often called the lemon granary of Karnataka, has long sustained lemon farming despite recurring droughts, with growers depending on tanker water. Their perseverance has now paid off as the variety secured the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, opening new market avenues. A dedicated Lemon Development Board has been established in Indi to support farmers with cultivation, processing, and value addition.

Until recently, farmers were forced to depend on middlemen and settle for fluctuating prices—high during summer but low during monsoons despite bumper yields. The GI recognition and direct export opportunities are now helping eliminate broker commissions and increase farmer earnings.
