CHINA has begun construction for a mega hydroelectric project on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in the Nyingchi region of southeastern Tibet.

- PRASANTA MAZUMDAR @ Guwahati

Chinese Premier Li Qiang attended the project commencement ceremony on Saturday, according to Chinese state-run media. Beijing approved the multi-billion-dollar project in 2023. The hydroelectric project, said to be the largest of its kind, will generate 60,000 MW of power. The Yarlung Tsangpo enters Arunachal Pradesh as the Siang and becomes the Brahmaputra in Assam before flowing into Bangladesh.
