Khalid, Imam fail to get SC bail, barred from appeal for a yr

THE Supreme Court on Monday refused to grant bail to activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 Delhi riots case, noting that the material against them attracted a prima facie case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

They were also barred from filing a fresh petition for bail for a year.

Khalid and Imam stand on different footing as compared to the other five who had sought bail, which can’t be ignored in terms of “parity and culpability”, the bench comprising justices Aravind Kumar and N V Anjaria ruled.

The other five — Gulfisha Fatima, Meera Haider, Shifa Ur Rehman, Mohd. Saleem Khan and Shadab Ahmed — were granted conditional bail.
