In 1st use of 1950 act, Assam hunt for 'declared foreigners'

THE Assam police are searching for five alleged illegal Bangladeshi immigrants declared foreigners by a foreigners’ tribunal (FT) in the state.

In the first known invocation of the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950, since the state cabinet approved its implementation earlier this year, Sonitpur District Commissioner (DC) Ananda Kumar Das on Wednesday issued orders directing the five people, declared foreigners by the FT on October 24, to “remove” themselves from India within 24 hours.
