Govt told to change threshold income for EWS school admission

THE Delhi High Court on Tuesday ordered the city government to decide on increasing the existing threshold income of ₹1 lakh per annum to a commensurate amount that corresponds to the living standards of the beneficiaries for admissions under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category in city schools.

Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav asked the AAP-led city government to carry on the process till an appropriate amendment is made in the 2011 scheme. The amount can be considered at ₹5 lakh instead of ₹1 lakh as all the other states have the threshold amount at almost ₹8 lakh, the HC held.

Currently, a child belonging to a weaker section is the one whose parents have a total annual income of less than ₹1 lakh from all sources and who have been staying in the city for three years.
