300 inmates in U'Khand prisons likely to be released on bail after SC verdict

IN a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court has ordered the release on bail of undertrial prisoners in Uttarakhand who have served one-third of their maximum sentence.
This reprieve excludes those accused of serious crimes punishable by life imprisonment or death.
According to sources at the jail department, the ruling aims to provide relief to prisoners languishing in jails for extended periods without trial.
As per the order, prisoners who have served 14 years or more may be granted bail, while those who have served over 10 years may also be eligible, provided there are strong objections.
