Companies’ role in countering drunk-driving
The Mercury
|January 21, 2026
THE recent release of the road safety report for the 2025/2026 festive season offers some cautious optimism.
It is encouraging that there has been a 5% year-on-year reduction in both fatalities and accidents for the 2025 festive season. Concerted efforts have resulted in the lowest number of road accidents in five years, and this must be applauded. However, even with this progress, more than 1 400 lives were lost, highlighting the persistent road risks that accompany the festive season.
Among the most serious contributors to road deaths is drinking and driving. Transport Minister Barbara Creecy reported that 173 695 drivers were screened for driving under the influence of alcohol during the festive season. At least 8 561 were found to be over the legal limit. Traffic police should be commended for scaling up roadblocks and testing for drinking and driving. While enforcement plays a truly vital role, it alone cannot transform behaviour. Alcohol companies and producers have both the resources and the reach to amplify effective awareness campaigns. In an era where brand values matter as much as products, taking a clearer stand against drinking and driving can save lives.
