Howe has warned his players they are in danger of spoiling themselves with late lapses of concentration. This season draws have turned to defeats late and wins have turned into draws on occasion, while Newcastle almost collapsed spectacularly against Burnley after leading comfortably at halftime before scraping a 2-1 lead. Those late jitters returned in Germany after Newcastle failed to put the game to bed at the BayArena against a spirited Bayer Leverkusen outfit.

When asked if the exciting team he is building are in danger of spoiling themselves with defensive lapses, Howe said: "I can't disagree. I think we have work to do.

"But I think we have work to do in every part of the game. I think we are team that are building in the right direction.
