University pulls plans for flagship development

PLANS for a multi-million pound project that would kick-start a flagship Newcastle regeneration project have been withdrawn.
Newcastle University said it was “exploring different funding options” for the first scheme in its Health Innovation Neighbourhood (HIN) development, located at the city's former general hospital.
The HIN masterplan is due to see the old hospital grounds in the West End transformed into a new community combining research labs, health facilities, and 1,250 new homes.
While the first phase of demolition works on the site has begun, it has emerged that the university has now withdrawn a planning application for a development that would act as a gateway to the HIN off Westgate Road.
