Smart wristbands to be trialled for dementia patients

SMART wristbands that aim to improve the safety of Gateshead residents who are living with dementia are to be tried out.
The wearable technology aims to safeguard people with the condition, of whom there are thought to be over 1,000 in the borough.
With around 70% of those living with dementia going missing at least once, this piece of equipment should help to get them back to their caregivers safely.
More than 20% of the population of Gateshead is over the age of 65, so both the dementia rates and demand for social care are rising.
Gateshead Council, alongside health partners and Northumbria Police, has announced a trial of 200 of the dementia safeguarding wristbands, making it easier for others to report someone as being missing, and connect them with their emergency contacts.
