Rashford double as Spanish giants take spoils at St James'

United were taught a harsh lesson on night one in the Champions League as Barcelona punished them for wasting first half chances before hitting Newcastle with a couple of second-half sucker punches from Marcus Rashford.

Anthony Gordon’s last-gasp goal could not spark a comeback but Newcastle fans burst into a resounding round of “we love you Newcastle we do” on the final whistle before chanting “Eddie Howe's black and white army” as the stars went around the field at the end.

This was not the result Newcastle were looking for of course, but there is plenty to build on with seven matches to go in the competition.

The excitement in the buildup to kick off was palpable with a flag display giving supporters goosebumps before the Champions League anthem belted out.

Barca players felt the full force of the atmosphere and Fermin Lopez’s wayward effort had the Gallowgate End howling with delight.

Moments later, Sandro Tonali’s full-blooded clearance won roars of approval before his name was chanted loudly by all four sides of the ground.
