Police not contacted over councillors' register of interests

NORTHUMBRIA Police have not been contacted over concerns around Northumberland county councillors’ register of interests - despite warnings from the local authority's top lawyer.

Speaking in September, monitoring officer Stephen Gerrard said he was “likely” to be referring “a few” councillors to the police for failing to correctly fill out the register.

The councillors in question were not identified and The Journal understands that no referrals have been made since then. A spokesman for the county council said: “We continue to encourage all councillors to complete their register of interests in the spirit of openness and candour.”
