New roles to support families facing cancer

The Journal

|

June 21, 2025

BOTH their mums had cancer - and now two Tyneside women are thought to be the first in the UK to take up new roles demystifying what having the heartbreaking illness hit your family is like for people with learning disabilities.

Newcastle's Kay Southern and North Shields’ Lindsey Fothergill are both keen to share their own experiences. They have been given roles as cancer learning disability project workers at the North East and Cumbria Learning Disability and Autism Network - which is in partnership with the Northern Cancer Alliance on the scheme, supported by Inclusion North.

The idea is to share vital information about coping with cancer with others who have learning disabilities and autism.
