MAYOR: I DEMANDED A METRO IMPROVEMENT PLAN AND I GOT IT

The Tyne and Wear Metro has recorded its best performance in almost three years, despite a failure that took its new trains out of action.

89% of Metro services arrived on time between April 1 and 26, the highest level recorded since June 2022. The end of that period includes days when the five active trains from the new Stadler fleet were suspended from use, following an incident at Simonside station on April 21 when a train’s doors opened on the wrong side.

Operator Nexus said that investment in the upkeep of its old trains, which have been running for 45 years and have become increasingly difficult to maintain, to increase the number of available carriages was key to the improved punctuality — as well as the new fleet now being rolled out.
