Massive surge in drone flights worries airport
The Journal
|November 22, 2025
A WARNING has been issued to people with drones after a rise in unauthorised flights around Newcastle International Airport.
In 2025 so far, 165 flights have been recorded in Newcastle's Flight Restriction Zone (FRZ), an increase of 371% on the previous year, with only 35 of these flights in all of 2024.
This rise brings a safety concern for the airport, with staff working alongside Northumbria Police to make people aware of the FRZ, and how they can ensure they are flying their drones safely.
The FRZ covers a 5km radius around the airport, encompassing areas such as Ponteland, Darras Hall, Westerhope, Great Park, and some parts of Kenton and Gosforth.
The zone is monitored by the Air Traffic Control Team, who help to safeguard aircraft operations, keeping passengers and crew safe.
