Labour is finding it so difficult to achieve anything

In case you had forgotten, the next general election doesn't have to take place until 2029. The government has a large majority and Labour MPs won't want to trigger an election before then for fear of losing their seats in the current unstable political climate.

- David Taylor-Gooby

Yet crisis there is. There is talk of replacing the prime minister, and Reform is soaring in the polls.

Talk to ordinary people and they'll express concern or even outright disgust at the fact that the government can’t get a grip on illegal immigration. They object to the obvious unfairness of it all, where illegal migrants can have taxis to go to hospital while they have to catch the bus.

Probe deeper and they'll probably say that neither Conservatives nor Labour seem to be able to tackle the deep-seated problems facing the country.

But point out that Nigel Farage doesn’t seem to have a plan either, and that some of his policies might be downright dangerous, and they may well shrug and say: “At least give him a go. The others are both hopeless.”
