Indie heroes
The Journal
|April 24, 2025
AFTER two weeks spent entertaining the kids, there’s not always a lot of money left to treat yourself.
Gaming is not a cheap hobby, and it’s difficult enough to justify spending £50+ on a new game at the best of times, but especially straight after the school holidays.
This is where indie games ride to the rescue.
Often much cheaper than the big releases, indie games are just as good - if not better - than some of the titles from the bigger studios.
So if you're hunting for your next gaming fix, but have already gone over budget this April, here are a few titles you should take a look at.
Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree
(PEGI 16) PS5, XBOX X/S, Switch, PC Price: £34.99
This ambitious RPG is something that should be on the radar of every fantasy fan.
A 2.5D side-scroller, Mandragora offers deep Metroidvania and Souls-like gameplay elements in a dark and brooding world of myth and magic.
You choose which Class of ‘Inquisitor’ you want to play as, and as you progress through the game you'll get to craft and upgrade your skills, combat and weapons.
‘There's a host of weird and terrifying monsters to battle as you attempt to root out heretics.
