Bus strikes back on as workers reject pay offer

THE Stagecoach summer bus strikes in Newcastle are back on, with 600 workers taking industrial action.
The staff, based at depots in Walkergate and Slatyford, rejected the latest pay offer, which union Unite says "did not bring workers pay parity with colleagues elsewhere in the UK".
The offer of a 5% pay rise, split over two years, was not deemed good enough by Stagecoach staff, with Unite giving the example that "Stagecoach North East drivers currently earn £15.01 an hour, but North West drivers in Manchester earn £17.54".
The strike action, set to take place on August 18 and 21, will include both drivers and engineers, and Unite has promised that it will intensify if the dispute is not resolved.
