Understanding emotional aftermath

Whether you have survived a storm, flood, earthquake, fire or other catastrophe, it is normal to feel overwhelmed.People often describe these feelings as the “blues,” a heavy sadness or sense of loss that lingers after the immediate danger has passed.

These emotions can show up in many ways. You might feel numb, disoriented, or unable to sleep. You may find yourself replaying what happened over and over in your mind. Some people feel anxious about the future, while others feel angry or frustrated that life has been disrupted. There is no single right way to respond. What matters most is recognising these feelings as human responses to an extreme event and learning practical ways to care for your wellbeing.

The first step in coping is to give yourself permission to feel what you are feeling. It is common to experience sadness, guilt, fear, or even relief after a disaster. These reactions are signals from your mind that you have been through something significant. Trying to ignore or suppress them rarely helps. Instead, acknowledge your emotions. You might find it helpful to talk openly with someone you trust, such as a family member, friend, or neighbour. Sharing your experience can make your feelings feel less heavy and remind you that you are not alone. If speaking feels difficult, you may choose to write in a journal, draw, or express your thoughts in another creative way.

Recognising your feelings can help you move from simply reacting to them toward understanding them. This is an important part of emotional healing.
