Sweet hidden dangers
The Island
|June 12, 2026
Artificial sweeteners have become a common part of modern diets, appearing in everything from soft drinks and yoghurt to chewing gum and even medicines.
-
Marketed as a healthier alternative to sugar because they contain little or no calories, they are widely used by people trying to lose weight or manage diabetes. However, beneath this attractive promise lies a growing list of concerns that suggest their long-term effects may not be as harmless as once believed.
One of the main worries is the potential impact on metabolism. Although artificial sweeteners do not directly raise blood sugar, some research suggests they may still interfere with the body's ability to regulate glucose. Changes in insulin response and glucose tolerance have been observed in certain studies, raising questions about whether these substances truly help reduce the risk of diabetes in the long run. In some cases, they may even contribute to metabolic imbalance when consumed regularly.
