How to keep mosquitoes at bay
The Island
|August 12, 2025
With mosquito-borne diseases, such as dengue, malaria, chikungunya and Zika virus, continuing to affect communities, preventing mosquito bites is more important than ever.
-
While health authorities carry out large-scale vector control programmes, individuals and households can play a decisive role in reducing the risk. Experts stress that prevention is far easier and far less costly than treating a serious illness.
Mosquitoes are not merely nuisance insects; they are carriers of dangerous pathogens. The Aedes aegypti mosquito, for example, spreads dengue and Zika virus, while the Anopheles mosquito transmits malaria. These species are active at different times of the day, meaning there is no "safe" hour without some risk. Their ability to breed in tiny collections of water, even in a bottle cap, makes them a persistent threat.
The most effective way to reduce mosquito populations is to deny them breeding grounds. Residents should inspect their surroundings at least once a week for stagnant water. Flowerpot saucers, discarded tyres, blocked gutters, and even coconut shells can serve as ideal nurseries for mosquito larvae. Empty and scrub containers to remove any eggs, which can cling to surfaces. Water storage tanks should be tightly sealed, and roof gutters kept clean.
