NEW DELHI: In a dramatic turn during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah introduced three pivotal legislative proposals in the Lok Sabha, sparking fierce opposition.
The three bills are: Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
They seek to fundamentally alter the political accountability of top elected officials. Under the proposed amendments, the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, Union Ministers, and officials in Union Territories could be automatically removed from office if held in judicial custody for 30 consecutive days on charges punishable by five years or more, regardless of conviction.
Supporters of the legislation-citing alignment with civil service norms-argue it reinforces the integrity of public office and acts as a deterrent against criminalisation in politics.
