New figures released by the BBC Shared Data Unit show that health chiefs face a challenge to tackle drugs and alcohol issues.

- STEWART MCCONNELL

In 2023-24 a survey of all 32 council areas showed that in North Ayrshire, some 500 people underwent initial assessments for specialist treatment for alcohol and drug problems - just below the average of 516. Eight people aged under-19 underwent assessment.

North Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership have said they were providing vital support for people battling problems in this area.

An HSCP spokesperson said: "In North Ayrshire, we have a number of options available for anyone requiring support around their own, or a family member's, substance use.

"North Ayrshire Drug and Alcohol Recovery Service (NADARS) offers a wide range of confidential support to anyone experiencing problems with their drug and/or alcohol use. Support takes a recovery approach tailored to specific needs, including Medication Assisted Treatment where required, one-to-one and group support options, and psychological support.

"Residential rehabilitation and detoxification can be provided at Woodland View Hospital in Irvine where necessary, and NAHSCP has pathways in place to support individuals into, during and after external residential rehabilitation placements, including access to whole family residential rehab support at Harper House in Saltcoats.
